my work

I recently realized (or admitted to myself) that
1. I do not work as hard as I could and

2. I waste a lot of time.

When I say work hard, I am including in that spending time on me and on things that I love that are perhaps not technically “work”. Which brings up another interesting question that has been on my mind.

What is my work?

It seems to me that lots of people have something that they DO but they have something else that they ARE. For example, what I AM is a writer, a bookmaker, a silversmith…someone who is creative and likes to make things with my hands. What I DO currently is be an Account Manager for a small company in South East Ohio.

I think that not many people are able to make what they DO into what they ARE.
For most people the two must remain separate.
They may continue to do the thing they love,
but they probably also have to continue to do the other thing in order to pay the bills.

(One of the greatest things about etsy is that it has allowed some very talented and driven people to turn what they are into what they do.)

I think there are many thoughtful people who struggle throughout their lives trying to figure out how to make a living doing something they love and that brings more good into the world. Not all of them will accomplish it, but for those who do it takes a lot of work, time, patience, and faith. These are people who DO NOT GIVE UP.

These are pretty amazing qualities that I would like to cultivate more in myself.
But I digress.
While thinking this I have made another goal for myself.
I don’t want to waste time.

It is not a waste of time to do things that I love that are not technically “practical.” But it is a waste of time to spend time on something that isn’t practical that I also don’t enjoy or really want to do.

Now I am off to have a good Wednesday.
Hope you do the same!
